How to read this gauge
The number is the water surface elevation in feet on NAVD88, the current national vertical datum: a height above a fixed survey reference, not a depth. Readings on different datums can't be compared directly.
This gauge reads one side of a floodgate; IHNC Surge Barrier West / Protected Side reads the other. The flood side is open water; the protected side is inside the levee system. When the gate is closed, the difference between the two is the height of water the structure is holding back.
