How to read these numbers

USGS rain gauges report the rain that fell in each 15-minute interval (5 minutes at a few); every figure here adds those up. "Last 24 hours" runs to each gauge's latest report; gauges that haven't reported in 3 hours show no current total. A day is the calendar day in the gauge's own time zone, so a storm that runs past midnight counts toward two days. The Houston-area county gauges on Houston-area rainfall report rolling 24-hour totals instead, so the two pages' figures aren't ranked together.

The readings are provisional and are published as USGS publishes them. Rain gauges can clog, fail or under-read in wind; a single interval reporting more than 3 inches is treated as a sensor fault and left out of every total, and a gauge recording under a quarter of what the gauges within 30 km averaged over the last 60 days is marked as possibly not measuring and left out of the counts and rankings. Nothing here is verified independently, and a rainfall total says nothing about flooding at any street or property.
